Popcorn Ceiling Removal: Cost, Process and What to Know First
Why testing comes before scraping, what the process actually involves, and what removal typically runs in Polk County homes.
Popcorn ceilings date a house more than almost any other single feature, and removing them transforms a room. It is also messier and more involved than it looks on video.
Test before anyone scrapes
This comes first and it is not optional. Ceiling texture applied in older homes can contain materials that require specific handling, and disturbing them without knowing is a genuine health matter — not just a regulatory one.
Testing is inexpensive and fast. If the result is clear, the job proceeds normally. If it is not, the work requires a properly licensed abatement contractor, and no reputable remodeler will scrape it for you.

What the process involves
- Clear and protect the room. Everything out, or everything sealed. Floors, walls, fixtures and doorways all get covered. This is a genuinely messy job and the protection stage is a real part of the labor.
- Cover or remove ceiling fixtures and turn off power to them.
- Mist the ceiling lightly with water and let it soak. Dry scraping makes far more dust and is harder work.
- Scrape in sections, keeping the surface damp.
- Skim coat. This is the step people forget. Under the texture the drywall was never finished to a smooth standard — the texture was hiding tape lines, fastener dimples and joint imperfections. Getting a smooth ceiling means skim coating and sanding the whole surface.
- Sand, prime and paint.
What drives cost
- Square footage of ceiling.
- Whether testing is needed and what it finds.
- Ceiling height. Higher ceilings mean staging and slower work.
- How much skim coating the ceiling needs once exposed. This varies a lot and is not fully knowable until the texture is off.
- Whether the texture has been painted. Painted popcorn does not absorb water well and is significantly harder to remove. This is a common and unwelcome surprise.
- Finish choice — smooth, knockdown, orange peel.
- Furniture and protection requirements.

Smooth is not the only option
Smooth ceilings are the current preference and they are also the least forgiving — every imperfection shows, particularly where daylight rakes across the surface. Alternatives worth considering:
- Knockdown texture — modern, hides minor imperfection, and much less skim coating required.
- Orange peel — subtle, easy to maintain and repair later.
- Cover it. Where the underlying drywall is in poor condition, installing new ceiling drywall over the top, or a planked ceiling, can cost less than remediating what is there.
Should you do it yourself?
Scraping is genuinely straightforward. The skim coating and finishing is where it goes wrong, and a ceiling is the least forgiving surface in a house because of how light hits it.

Do it before you move in, or before flooring
If you have the option, remove popcorn before furniture and flooring go in. The mess is dramatically easier to manage in an empty room, and it costs less because protection and cleanup are a large share of the labor.
