Painting Kitchen Cabinets: Is It Worth It, and What It Costs
Painted cabinets can look like new for a fraction of replacement, or peel in a year. The difference is prep and product. What the job involves in a Florida kitchen.
Painting kitchen cabinets is the middle option between living with a dated kitchen and replacing everything. Done well, it is the most cost-effective change a kitchen can get. Done badly, it is the job that peels at the handles within a year and makes the whole kitchen look worse than before. The difference is almost entirely preparation and the product, and in a humid Florida kitchen both matter more than they do elsewhere.
When painting makes sense
Painting is the right call when the cabinet boxes are solid, the doors are wood or a quality MDF, the layout works and the problem is the color or the finish. Oak cabinets from the 1980s and 90s, dark cherry from the 2000s, and honey-toned builder cabinets in newer Polk County subdivisions are all good candidates. It is the wrong call when the boxes are swollen particleboard, the doors are peeling thermofoil, the layout is the real problem, or the drawers and hinges are failing. Why cabinet paint fails
- Grease. Kitchen cabinets are coated in a film of cooking oil that ordinary cleaning does not remove. Paint over it and it will not bond.
- No sanding or the wrong primer. Factory finishes are hard and slick. Without scuffing and a bonding primer, paint sits on top and chips at every edge.
- Wall paint. Latex wall paint stays soft, blocks, and wears through at the handles. Cabinets need a hard-curing enamel.
- Brushing everything. Brush marks on a door look homemade. Doors and drawer fronts should be sprayed.
- Humidity during cure. Enamel cures slowly in Florida humidity, and doors rehung too soon stick to the frames and pull the finish off.
What a proper job involves
- Doors, drawer fronts and hardware come off and are labeled. The kitchen is masked and the boxes are painted in place.
- Everything is degreased, then sanded to dull the finish, then cleaned again.
- Open grain like oak is filled if a smooth finish is wanted; otherwise the grain shows through paint.
- Dents, old hardware holes and damaged edges are filled and sanded.
- A bonding primer goes on, then two coats of a cabinet-grade enamel. Doors are sprayed flat in a controlled space; boxes are sprayed or brushed and rolled with a fine finish.
- Everything cures for several days before reassembly. New hinges, soft-close if wanted, and new hardware go on last.
Boxes, interiors and the sink base
The insides of cabinets are usually left as they are, since they are rarely seen and painting them doubles the labor. Face frames, end panels and any exposed sides are painted with the doors. The sink base gets a close look before anything is painted: years of small leaks leave the floor of that cabinet swollen or delaminated, and a new liner or a replaced bottom panel is a small fix that should happen first. Toe kicks and the trim at the ceiling are painted to match so the run reads as one piece.
Timeline and living through it
Expect the kitchen to be partly out of service for most of a week to ten days, with the doors away being finished while the boxes are done in place. Plan meals accordingly. The cure time is the part homeowners most want to shorten and the part that most decides whether the finish lasts.
Color and sheen
White and off-white are the most common choices and they photograph well, but in a kitchen with heavy use, a light gray or a mid-tone hides fingerprints better around the handles. Satin or semi-gloss enamel is the standard sheen; it cleans well and shows fewer imperfections than gloss. Two-tone kitchens with darker lower cabinets and lighter uppers are popular and practical. How long do painted kitchen cabinets last?
With proper degreasing, sanding, bonding primer and a cabinet-grade enamel, many years of normal use. The finish wears first at the most-used handles and can be touched up. Skipping prep or using wall paint is what causes peeling within a year.
Can oak cabinets be painted smooth?
Yes, if the grain is filled before priming. Without filling, the oak texture shows through the paint, which some people like and others do not.
How long is the kitchen out of use?
Plan on roughly a week to ten days. Doors are finished off-site while boxes are done in place, and the enamel needs several days to cure before doors are rehung.
Should I replace the hinges when painting cabinets?
It is the ideal time. Old hinges are often worn and painting around them is messy. Soft-close hinges and new pulls are a modest cost and make the kitchen feel new.
