Replacing Interior Doors: Slab or Prehung?
The decision comes down to whether the existing frame is square. Here is how to tell before you buy anything.
Replacing interior doors is one of the highest-impact cosmetic changes in a house for the money, and the whole job hinges on one question: is the existing frame square and sound?
Slab replacement
A slab is just the door — no frame. You reuse the existing jamb and hinges, which means less work, less cost, and no disturbance to the trim.
It only works if the existing frame is square, plumb and in good condition. If it is not, a new slab hung in a racked frame will bind exactly the way the old one did.
You also have to match hinge positions and the lock bore, or be prepared to mortise the new slab to suit.
Prehung replacement
The door comes already hung in a new frame. You remove the old frame and trim, set the new unit plumb and square, shim it, and re-trim.
More work, more cost, and new trim needed — but it fixes a frame problem rather than working around one.
This is the right answer where a door has never closed properly, where the frame has water damage, or where the opening has moved.
How to check your frame
- Close the door and look at the gap all the way round. It should be even. A gap that tapers means the frame is out of square.
- Check the jamb with a level on both sides. Out of plumb means the door will swing open or closed on its own.
- Press the jamb at the strike — any softness means water damage and the frame needs to go.
- Look at the hinge screws. If they have stripped and been re-drilled several times, the jamb may not hold a new door reliably.
What actually changes a house
Solid-core doors instead of hollow-core is the upgrade people notice most. They sound and feel completely different, and they cut noise between rooms substantially. The price difference is real but so is the result.
Consistent hardware across the house — all the handles and hinges the same finish — makes a bigger visual difference than the doors themselves in a lot of homes.

Can I replace just the door and keep the frame?
