Wainscoting and Panel Molding: What It Costs and Where It Works

One of the highest-impact carpentry upgrades for the money, provided it suits the room.

Wall paneling is one of the few upgrades that visibly changes a room without touching the layout, and it costs a fraction of what most people assume.

The main styles

Height matters more than style

The single most common mistake is height. A chair-rail-height wainscot in a room with tall ceilings looks stunted; a full-height treatment in a small room closes it in. The proportion should relate to the ceiling height rather than to a standard number.

We mock it up on the wall with tape before committing. It takes ten minutes and it prevents the one thing that cannot be fixed afterwards.

Florida considerations

In a bathroom or laundry, use moisture-resistant material — MDF is common for paneling and it does not tolerate water. PVC and moisture-resistant products cost slightly more and last.

Also seal the top edge properly wherever a horizontal cap meets the wall. That edge collects moisture and dust, and unsealed MDF swells.

Where it works best

Dining rooms, entries and hallways, stairwells, and any room with a large expanse of blank wall. Bathrooms and laundry rooms, with the right material. It works less well in rooms already busy with windows, doors and built-ins.

Frequently asked questions

What height should wainscoting be?

It should relate to the ceiling height rather than to a fixed number. A chair-rail-height treatment looks stunted under a tall ceiling, and a full-height one closes in a small room. Mock it up with tape before committing — it is the one thing that cannot be adjusted afterwards.

Can wainscoting go in a bathroom?

Yes, with moisture-resistant material. Standard MDF paneling does not tolerate water and swells at any unsealed edge. PVC or a moisture-resistant product costs a little more and lasts.
