Laundry Room Ideas That Actually Make the Room Work

Counter space, hanging space, storage and the utility details that get forgotten until it is too late.

The laundry room is the least designed room in most houses. It usually contains two appliances and a floor, and everything else happens on top of the machines or on the way somewhere else.

It is also one of the cheapest rooms to transform, because it is small.

The three things that make the biggest difference

1. A folding surface

The single most useful addition. A countertop over front-loading machines, or a run of counter along one wall, changes how the room functions completely — laundry gets folded there instead of migrating to a bed or a couch.

If the machines are top-loading, a fold-down or pull-out surface on an adjacent wall does the same job.

2. Hanging space

A rod, even a short one, for items that come out of the dryer and need hanging immediately. This is what stops wrinkled clothes accumulating on hangers elsewhere in the house.

3. Real storage

Cabinets above the machines for detergent, cleaning supplies and the things that otherwise live on top of the dryer. A tall cabinet for a broom, vacuum and mop is worth more than people expect.

The utility details people forget

• A utility sink, if there is room. Enormously useful for soaking, hand washing and cleaning tasks that should not happen in a kitchen sink.
• A floor drain or a drain pan under the washer. A washing machine supply line failure floods a house, and in a laundry room adjacent to living space that is expensive.
• Braided steel supply hoses rather than rubber. Rubber hoses fail and they are the single most common cause of household water damage. This is a cheap upgrade with a large payoff.
• An accessible shutoff for the washer, and knowing where it is.
• Dryer venting. The shortest, straightest run possible, with rigid or semi-rigid duct rather than the flexible foil type, and vented outside. A lint-clogged vent is a fire risk and it also makes the dryer run far longer.
• Adequate lighting. Most laundry rooms have one dim fixture. Sorting laundry in poor light is a small daily annoyance that is trivially fixed.
• Ventilation. In Florida a closed laundry room gets humid, and humidity plus a dark room means mildew. An exhaust fan or a vented door helps.

Flooring

Choose something waterproof and easy to clean. Tile and luxury vinyl plank both work well. Carpet in a laundry room is a mistake for obvious reasons, and it is more common than you would think.

Small-space ideas

• Stacking a front-load washer and dryer frees an entire machine footprint for storage or a sink.
• A pull-out hamper cabinet keeps sorting off the floor.
• A narrow rolling cart between or beside machines uses dead space.
• Adding a door or a curtain to a laundry closet in a hallway makes a real visual difference.
• Wall-mounted ironing boards fold away completely.

Combining with a mudroom

Where the laundry room is also the entry from the garage — very common in Florida homes — combining the two functions is worth planning deliberately. Hooks, a bench, cubbies and a place for shoes turn a pass-through into the most useful room in the house.

Budget order

1. Braided supply hoses and a drain pan. Cheap, and it prevents the expensive event.
2. Dryer vent cleaned and improved.
3. Counter or folding surface.
4. Storage and hanging space.
5. Lighting.
6. Flooring and finishes.
7. Utility sink, if space allows.
