Hard Water in Central Florida: What It Does to Your Fixtures

Scale on faucets, cloudy glass, failing water heaters and shortened fixture life — what hard water costs and what helps.

Central Florida sits on limestone, and the water reflects it. Hard water is not a health problem, but it is quietly expensive — it shortens the life of everything water touches and it makes a clean bathroom look dirty.

How to tell you have it

• White chalky buildup on faucet aerators, shower heads and around drains.
• Spots on glassware and shower doors that come back immediately after cleaning.
• Soap that will not lather, and a film left on skin and in the tub.
• Stiff laundry and colors that fade faster.
• Reduced flow from a shower head or faucet as scale narrows the openings.
• A water heater that gets noisy — popping or rumbling as sediment collects in the tank.

What it actually costs you

• Water heater life. Scale settles in the tank, insulates the heating element from the water, and forces the heater to run longer for the same result. It shortens the life of the unit and raises the energy it uses.
• Fixture life. Scale builds inside cartridges and valves, causing drips and stiff handles.
• Appliance life. Dishwashers and washing machines both suffer.
• Cleaning time. Glass shower doors in particular become a permanent chore.
• Finish damage. Aggressive cleaners used repeatedly to remove scale damage chrome and other finishes over time.

What helps, in order of cost

Wipe it down

The cheapest and most effective habit. A squeegee on the shower glass after each use prevents nearly all of the buildup that people spend hours removing later.

Descale what is already scaled

Faucet aerators and shower heads unscrew and soak. White vinegar dissolves scale effectively. For a shower head that cannot be removed easily, a bag of vinegar tied around it overnight works.

Avoid aggressive acid cleaners on chrome, brushed and matte finishes — they remove scale and they damage the finish underneath.

Flush the water heater

Draining the sediment out of a tank water heater annually is genuinely worthwhile in a hard water area. It extends the heater's life and keeps it efficient. Our guide on water heater warning signs covers when it is past that point.

Point-of-use filtration

A shower head with a filter, or an under-sink system for drinking water. Helps at that fixture only, and it is cheap.

A water softener

The real solution. It removes the calcium and magnesium that cause hardness, which stops scale forming anywhere downstream — fixtures, water heater, appliances and glass.

Trade-offs: it needs salt topped up, it uses water to regenerate, it needs a drain and power, and softened water feels different — some people love it and some do not.

What a softener does not fix

A softener addresses hardness. It does not improve taste, remove chlorine, filter sediment or address a rotten-egg smell. Those are different problems needing different equipment, which is why people sometimes buy a softener and are disappointed.

Test the water first, or read your utility's annual water quality report, rather than buying based on a symptom.

Where it shows up in remodeling

Hard water is worth factoring into fixture and finish choices:

• Glass shower enclosures are the highest maintenance item in a hard water area. Some glass comes with a factory-applied protective coating that helps considerably and is worth asking about.
• Matte black and brushed finishes show water spots more than polished chrome, and they tolerate acidic cleaners less well.
