The Handyman List: Why One Visit Beats Six

Every separate call carries the cost of getting somebody there. Batching the list is straightforwardly cheaper.

Most households have a list. A door that sticks, a cabinet that will not close, a towel bar that came off the wall, caulk that has gone black, a light that flickers. Individually none of them is worth a call, so none of them gets done.

The economics

Every visit carries a fixed cost: getting a person and a van to your address. Spread over one item that cost is the whole job. Spread over twelve items it is negligible.

That is the entire argument for batching. A list of small jobs handled in one visit costs a fraction of the same jobs handled reactively over a year, and the house stops slowly degrading in the meantime.

Making the list useful

  1. Walk every room including the garage, laundry and outside. Write down everything, however small.
  2. Be specific. "The guest bathroom door does not latch" is actionable; "some doors are weird" is not.
  3. Photograph anything unusual and send it ahead. It lets us bring the right parts rather than making a second trip.
  4. Flag anything involving water separately. Those go first, because water damage compounds.
  5. Note anything you have already tried, which saves repeating it.

What belongs on a handyman list

What is a bigger job

Anything structural, anything involving opening a wall, and anything where the visible problem is a symptom of something behind it. We will tell you which is which rather than starting and discovering it.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a minimum for a handyman visit?

There is a practical one, in the sense that getting a person and a van to an address costs the same whether there is one item or twelve. That is exactly why batching a list is better value — the fixed cost is spread across everything on it.

What should I have ready before the visit?

A specific written list covering every room including the garage and outside, photographs of anything unusual sent ahead, and any water-related items flagged separately so they get dealt with first.
